The Famous McCann Dog Show

The Purina Pro Plan Dog Stars Show features the famous McCann Dogs in a spectacular demonstration of the canine sports of Flyball and Agility.

Flyball is a highly energized canine team relay competition that's "noisy, fast, exciting and ball racing crazy!!" that earns the enthusiastic roar of the crowd and set the dogs' tails to wagging as well.   You will be amazed and entertained by this relay race between 2 teams of four dogs.   The object of the sport is for each dog to jump over a set of four hurdles as fast as possible and at the far end, grab a tennis ball from a spring-loaded box. Banking off the box to reverse direction, they race back to cross the start line at which point their canine teammate rockets out for their lap!   W hether you're cheering for the top dogs or the underdogs, many races come down to the wire and its always entertaining.

Agility competitions are the rage these days and for good reason.   This canine sport was born in England and its no accident that the obstacles are miniature versions of the jumps and barriers on a horse-jumping course.   The agility scores reflect speed and accuracy, as the dogs are coaxed to climb, jump or crawl through a series of obstacles.   Basic obedience is a must as the dogs are off collar during the trials and their handlers "talk" them through the course.   With the order of obstacles on each course being different and the pathway between the obstacles twisting and turning, the dogs must be in-sync with their handlers so they don't run up the A-frame when they should be headed for the weave poles!   It's a race against the clock with dog, handler and elapsed time being the critical components as judges add fault points to the score for each obstacle that is not taken cleanly.    The most popular agility breeds are the medium to large dogs but almost any dog, including mixed breeds, can do well if they're game.

It's a dog-gone great show the whole family will enjoy.     Purina is proud to host 5 days of amazing entertainment including The Purina Pro Plan Dog Stars featuring the famous McCann Dogs, The Gold Whistle Retriever Trials, Big Air Dog Jump, Dogs with Jobs, The Rare Breed Dog Show and 50,000 sq. ft Breed Hall.   It's all for free so don't miss the opportunity to enjoy these incredible shows which are worth the price of admission alone! Big Air Dog Jump

Back by popular demand, amazing is the only word to describe it .    If you have ever seen a dog launch off the end of a dock as he chases a stick into the water, then you get the idea behind this exciting competition. The Toronto Sportsmen's Show's Big Air Dog Jump has captivated our audience for over 6 years as dogs jump, soar and splash in their quest to "go the distance".   Guaranteed to wow the crowd, Purina is proud to bring it indoors and present it to you free as part of your admission!   The competition consists of dog and handler teams who first throw a ball or decoy into the pool while keeping the dogs heeled and under control.   At point of release by the handler, it's a mad dash down a 40-foot ramp to leap to the best of its ability and retrieve the object.    Each dog is measured on the distance they go before hitting the water.    Whether a new record is set or not, it's unbelievable to watch these dogs soar through the air before hitting the water and creating a huge splash.   Stand back, because they often soak the crowd!   The Big Air Dog Jump is a crowd favorite, so make sure you don't miss it!

Gold Whistle Retriever Trials

The Toronto Sportsmen's Show is renowned for its variety of entertainment and our Dog and other canine competitions remain unsurpassed!   The Gold Whistle Retriever Trials, North America's longest running Retriever Trials, are back by popular demand!   This realistic upland hunting and water fowling simulation is a test of dog and handler designed to challenge both natural ability and acquired training.    The trials are amazing to watch as decoys or "birds" are launched into the retriever course and championship dogs heed their handler's audio commands and hand signals to recover them as quickly and efficiently as possible.   The winner of this exciting competition will be judged to be the team that excels best in the field by performing in a manner consistent with the demands of actual hunting conditions while creating the least amount of disturbance in the natural environment.   The top dogs will be invited back for the finals on Sunday to compete for the coveted Gold Whistle.    It's a spectacular show that's loved by visitors of all ages so be sure to get your seats early!

Quality Deer Management

Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) Canada is an organization that promotes the healthy conservation practice of uniting landowners, hunters, and wildlife managers in the common goal of producing balanced deer herds within existing environmental constraints. This QDMA Canada approach typically involves the protection of young bucks combined with an acceptable harvest of female deer to maintain   healthy population balances within existing habitat conditions and landowner desires. This style of deer management involves the production of quality deer (bucks, does, and fawns), quality habitat, quality hunting experiences, and, most importantly, quality hunters.   Consequently, to an increasing number of landowners and hunters, the practices of QDMA Canada is a desirable alternative to traditional management, which allows the harvest of any legal buck and few, if any, does.   Representatives from QDMA Canada will discuss their organization and their conservation mission, how adopting QDMA practices will benefit deer herds, habitat and hunters, planning for food plots, small acreage management, how to age live bucks in the field,   factors affecting antler growth and why its important to understand deer biology to name a few.

Quality Deer Management speakers:

Brian Murphy:

Brian Murphy is a wildlife biologist and Executive Director of the Quality Deer Management Association since 1997.

Kip Adams:

Kip Adams is a certified wildlife biologist and QDMA's Northern Director of Education and Outreach.

Matt Ross:

Matt Ross is a wildlife biologist and forester and QDMA's New England/Canada regional director.
